Up To The Ears

Book Review in THERAPY WEEKLY, July 1990

THIS concise but informative book outlines an alternative approach for understanding and treating sudden deafness, vertigo and tinnitus. The author, Dr. Hans Greuel, rejects conventional methods of medication as an effective treatment.

Dr. Greuel, pioneer of bio- mental therapy for sudden deafness, contends that this illness is caused by the stresses of modern daily life.

Dr. Greuel is adamant that sudden deafness is a psychosomatic disease deriving from personal, family and job pressures.

Central to his argument is the contention of linkage between external stress and internal changes in the autonomic system`s functions and circulation, which result in problems of the vestibulocochlear system.

Consequently, the most effective method for dealing with these problems is to focus on the stress itself.

Relaxation techniques, biofeedback, healing hypnosis, mental training and auto-suggestive mechanisms play a central role in Dr. Greuel`s approach. By employing these techniques Dr Greuel maintains that he achieves more than an 80 per cent success rate in reducing the symptoms.

Towards the end of the book, the author presents a series of very interesting case histories, in which he demstrates the achievements of his approach in dealing with various symptoms.

This book is addressed to both sufferes and professionals, and is a valuable contribution to the literature in this field. It is available at
